With her proven record as a fighter for human rights and equality Michelle Bachelet is a great choice, a person who will try to do good for the people in the world in this difficult times.

PES president Sergei Stanishev said: “We are happy that a true progressive person will be running such a key part form the UN scope of work. In the 21 century, human rights are constantly promoted, but also constantly violated, even here in Europe. I am sure that Michelle Bachelet will be on the highest level of performance in defending the rights of the people across the globe.”

Bachelet, who is a former president of Chile from the Chilean Socialist Party was also awarded this year by the Progressive Alliance.

The PES extends its full support to the new High Commissioner and her Office in the fulfilment of her mandate. We are glad that UN Secretary General António Guterres now has a strong progressive member of his team in charge of such an important matters as the human rights. We wish success to both of them.
